Biography

Attorney Ryan Maesen founded Maesen Law (formally Ryan Maesen, PLC) to focus exclusively on criminal defense in Grand Rapids and throughout West Michigan. With more than 20 years of experience in the Michigan criminal justice system, he brings courtroom-tested judgment to every case.

I have tried nearly 90 cases in Michigan, securing results that include directed-verdict dismissals on serious criminal sexual conduct counts and no-jail resolutions for federal embezzlement charges. I have also had approximately 15 cases dismissed right before trial because the prosecution recognized it could not meet its burden.

I take a “long view” approach. Many cases should not be pled out right away. Time is often our ally — new evidence may surface, witnesses may change their accounts, or the prosecution’s position may weaken. Acting too quickly, when everyone is thinking emotionally, rarely leads to the best outcome.

Prior to practicing law, I worked in banking, insurance, and the securities industry and earned an MBA from Grand Valley State University’s Seidman School of Business. That background gives me an advantage in white-collar and financial cases — I know how financial records are supposed to look and where they fall short. I have had clients who were actually guilty have their charges dropped because the prosecution could not produce the records when I pressed for them.

I also have extensive experience with sex offense cases. I have secured dismissals, not-guilty verdicts, and favorable plea resolutions in criminal sexual conduct matters because I am prepared to take these cases to trial. Do not hire an attorney who treats a sex offense charge as a quick plea — the consequences of a conviction are far-reaching, and you deserve someone willing to fight.
